Demo Accounts and Practice Plans That Transfer to Live Markets
A demo account is a laboratory, not a video game. Structure decides whether anything transfers.

Why most demo phases teach nothing
Two design errors ruin simulated practice. The first is unrealistic capital: a $100,000 demo balance when you intend to fund $2,000 live trains position sizes you will never use. The second is unlimited resets, which removes the consequence that makes learning stick.
Fix both by matching the demo balance to your intended live deposit and treating a blown demo account as a two-week research pause. Suddenly the exercise resembles the thing it is meant to prepare you for.
Deliberate practice blocks
Deliberate practice isolates one skill, repeats it with feedback, and measures the result. Applied to trading, that means blocks rather than open-ended screen time.
- Block one — mechanics. Fifty orders of each type. Goal: zero ticket errors.
- Block two — structure. Annotate one hundred charts for trend, range and key zones before any trade.
- Block three — sizing. Calculate position size manually for thirty setups using the method in position sizing.
- Block four — full process. One hundred journaled trades on a single setup, one instrument, one session.
Notice that only the fourth block resembles what beginners normally do on day one.

Milestones that mean something
Define graduation criteria in advance and in behavioural terms rather than profit terms: one hundred trades logged, plan-followed rate above 90%, expectancy positive across the sample, maximum drawdown within the limit you set, and no single trade exceeding planned risk.
Profit is deliberately absent from that list. A profitable sample driven by three oversized trades demonstrates nothing repeatable, while a marginally positive sample with clean process is genuinely encouraging.
Where simulation lies
Demo environments typically fill better than live accounts. Stops trigger cleanly, slippage is minimal and requotes are absent. When translating results, discount your simulated expectancy — many desks assume a quarter to a third of demo edge disappears on contact with live execution.
Check platform-specific behaviour too: whether the demo uses the same feed and the same spread policy as live, and whether swap is applied. Those details determine how comparable the two are, and they are among the items we verify for one consumer platform in the NordicFX review. Background on the mechanics sits in order types and execution.

The transition to live capital
Go live with the smallest size the platform allows and with money whose loss changes nothing material in your life. Keep the same journal, the same setup and the same session. Expect performance to degrade for the first fifty trades — that degradation is the emotional component finally appearing in the data.
Read trading psychology and journaling alongside this phase, and verify the entity holding your funds using platform regulation and fund safety before any deposit.
